Thongpapanl (2012) provided “…an up-to-date ranking of the leading technology and innovation management (TIM) specialties journals” (p. 257) that sought build upon the rankings “…reported in Linton and Thongpapanl’s (2004) study and to further evaluate the relations among different TIM specialty journals as well as between TIM specialty journals and traditional disciplines” (p. 258). The author performed a citation analysis for every issue of 15 technology and innovation management journals (“base journals”) between 2006 and 2010. According to his analysis, the Top 10 innovation journals are:
- Research Policy
- Strategic Management Journal
- Journal of Product Innovation Management
- Management Science
- Academy of Management Journal
- Harvard Business Review
- Academy of Management Review
- Research-Technology Management
- Organization Science
- Technovation
These results are similar to Crossan and Apaydin (2010). The authors conducted a systematic review of the innovation literature over a 27 year period (1981-2008) with the goal of providing “…a comprehensive overview and a conceptual, rather than an empirical, consolidation” of it (p. 1157). Starting with an initial sample of 10,946 papers, the authors grouped the articles into the following: (1) reviews and meta-analyses; (2) highly cited papers; and (3) recent papers. The recent papers group included articles published between 2006 and 2008. Based on their review, the Top 10 innovation journals, based on the number of papers published on the topic during that time period, are:
- Research Policy
- Strategic Management Journal
- Journal of Product Innovation Management
- Management Science
- Academy of Management Journal
- Organization Science
- Regional Studies
- Administrative Science Quarterly
- Academy of Management Review
- Rand Journal of Economics
As you’ll notice the first five from both lists are identical. Moreover, two additional journals – Academy of Management Review and Organization Science – were found in the bottom half of both lists; albeit in different rankings. It’s encouraging to see two different methodologies produce similar results.
